                  DNA Used to ID Pet Waste

BioPet Vet Lab, a Knoxville, Tenn., biotechnology company specializing in canine genetic testing, is rolling out a national program designed to promote public awareness of dog waste problems and encourage dog owners to take steps that will improve local air and water quality. The PooPrints Green Initiative is an outgrowth of the company’s PooPrints pet waste identification program, which provides communities with a way to enforce pooper scooper regulations in multifamily communities. Participants will pledge to go green and volunteer a sample of their dog’s DNA via a noninvasive cheek swab. Each registered dog will get a PooPrints Green Initiative dog tag for its collar—a green tag that serves as an environmental reminder. “Aside from simply being an unsightly problem, unscooped dog waste is doing a surprising amount of damage to the environment and local communities across the country,” said Jim Simpson, president of BioPet Vet Lab. “Through partnerships with community organizations and businesses, we hope to help remedy this problem and help make cities cleaner and more pet-friendly.”
